The Sleepy Jackson is the Australian psychedelic group formed by Luke Steele, the frontman of Empire of the Sun. "Good Dancers" is the opening track on the band's debut album Lovers. The song features guitar work that seems to sing throughout the track as it compliments Steele's voice. The repeated lyric "Don't always dream for what you want" makes you feel as if you are in a dream when listening to this track.

SONG OF THE DAY: Big K.R.I.T - "King Pt. 2"
Big K.R.I.T followed up "KING" with a part two, once again talking about social issues over the Just Blaze-produced 'Lord Knows' instrumental. I really don't know who could dislike Big K.R.I.T he is consistently putting out new music that is way too under appreciated. He is undoubtedly one of the most talented, intelligent, and well spoken artists around. Once again he left us satisfied with his southern influence.

SONG OF THE DAY: Breakbot - Summerparty
Breakbot is Thibaut Berland, the Electro-funk DJ/Producer hailing from France. On this track, "Summerparty" from first release, Happy Rabbit EP, he proves that sometimes glitchy can work. That is, if it is well produced. And I sincerely state that I am sure no one can truly say that this track isn't incredibly well assembled. All of it's parts work cohesively with the in and out dance beat parlayed with the drifting background synths. He'll be at Coachella, so give it a listen, and imagine having it on at a dance party in the middle of a hot San Diego spring afternoon.

SONG OF THE DAY: The Black Angels - "Yellow Elevator"
Todays song of the day comes from one of our favorite psych-rock bands the Black Angels. The fourth song off their 2010 album Phosphene Dream, todays featured song is "Yellow Elevator." Any classic rock fans would do well to check this one out and then proceed to pick up the entire album. You can't just compare a band to The Doors like its not a big deal, but goddamn it this band reminds me of The Doors. Check it out.

SONG OF THE DAY: Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - "40 Day Dream"
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros are an eleven member group that formed in 2009. Led by Alex Ebert, the band's debut LP, Up From Below, was released in July of 2009. "40 Day Dream" is this first track on the record. This song is about as happy as it gets. If it doesn't make you want to sing and dance than I don't know what will. It's pretty cool to see how much fun the band has while performing it which makes this track so good live.

Not exactly an indie pick but good all together. Clams Casino came out with this song in the not to recent past. Not many songs can make you feel like your in a Mediterranean concert off the cost of Spain, surrounded by beautiful women, of course; but this one does. If you take it for what it is, it will certainly take you to many different places.

SONG OF THE DAY: How to Destroy Angels - "The Space in Between"
Today's song of the day is The Space in Between, the first track off of the How to Destroy Angels EP. How to Destroy Angels is a side project by Trent Reznor and his wife Mariqueen Maandig who as of right now have only released one EP, which can be downloaded for free from the bands website. The song is layered thick with industrial beats with Maandigs powerful voice singing over them. The song grabs your attention from the get go and doesn't let up. If you like the song, make sure to pick up the entire EP. It is fantastic.

This fourteen minute ballad was released by the band as a single in 2008. What is most strange is that it is much more similar to their later work on Congratulations (Siberian Breaks) than it is to their 2007 album, Oracular Spectacular. Like the previously mentioned "Siberian Breaks", this track changes almost more times than you can count. It is an ever-evolving gem that combines the happy melodies which MGMT is famous for with their perpetually trippy lyrics. Additionally, you won't hear teenage girls listening to this, which is a plus. (see "Kids")

SONG OF THE DAY: Eddie Vedder - "Society"
The best way to experience Into the Wild, the soundtrack, is to watch the movie. Eddie Vedder, the lead singer of Pearl Jam, wrote the album after seeing a first cut of the movie, Into the Wild. His work perfectly captivated the essence of the movie and completed it in a way that no one else could. Vedder wrote "Society", with incredible lyricism. "There's those thinkin' more or less, less is more,
but if less is more, how you keepin' score?". "Society" tells the struggle of breaking all ties with societal norms. If only Bon Iver would cover this on his next trip to that magical land in Wisconsin.

Before "Midnight City" was ever thought of. Before Anthony Gonzalez was selling out almost every concert. Before his band M83 had the song of the year according to Pitchfork; came something that was a little more ambient and shoegazer in a way. From his second album titled Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts comes the song "Run Into Flowers". Other than having the coolest album name, you can see that some of his best music was made long before he put a picture of Mrs. Piggy on crack on the cover of an album.

SONG OF THE DAY: Cloud Nothings - "Wasted Days"
Guitars might be the greatest invention ever. Like ever ever. That and headphones/speakers to listen to people play guitars out of. "Wasted Days" is the longest and most epic (I hate that word but it fits here) track from Cloud Nothings excellent new LP Attack on Memory (Out tomorrow 1/24). Not only are the guitars staggering on this song, but the anger in which they are played makes them exponentially better. There is an anger on this entire album that seems to come to a head during this particular track. While the opening is fast paced and rolls around the lyrics, the middle is consumed by a slower paced jam that builds and builds. The guitars revolve around each other like two pit bulls circling and waiting to strike at each other's necks. At nearly nine minutes long, this is a song that could seemingly convey multiple musical stylings yet it evokes essentially one: angry guitar slaying. As the chaos that is the core jam rises, you as the listener sense that something crazy is bound to happen. The song delays this for nearly as long as it possibly can and then even teases you with a minor little bridge. Not until there is just around fifty seconds left does it finally break, but when it does you can just imagine being at a concert and witnessing the bedlam it would be. Listen to this song on loud. And be angry. Because it will just make it that much better.

SONG OF THE DAY: Washed Out - "Feel It All Around"
Chillwave: a genre of music whose artists are often characterized by their heavy use of effects processing, synthesizers, looping, sampling, and heavily filtered vocals with simple melodic lines.
That's it according to Wikipedia. Still don't get it? Check out this track by Washed Out instead then. Let this tune literally "wash" over your body. You'll feel cleansed and alive. This song is like doing bikram yoga without the bikram or the yoga. It's that "chill." Listen to the Portlandia opener to fall asleep or listen to it when you're high. It doesn't matter. Either way you truly will "feel it" all around you. Whatever "it" is. Maybe it's chillwave. There's not much else to say.

SONG OF THE DAY: the xx - "You've Got the Love (Florence + The Machine Cover)"
If you asked me three weeks ago what I thought the future of music would be like, I probably couldn't tell you. Today, I would tell you it's the xx. In that same time, I came across this track. Not being from their excellent debut album, I had never heard it before, but my mind was blown upon first listen. I was even skeptical as to what the band's follow up will be like (they are currently recording). With them being so young during the first record, I felt that a solid follow-up would be so difficult. I am try aware of their musical talents now however.
This track is a cover/remix of Florence + the Machine's "You've Got the Love." It opens with the soft harp from the background of the original track and the swirling nature of Romy Croft and Oliver Sim's vocals that were so pure in their debut is still existent in it's most beautiful form on this track. It's certainly clear that Jamie xx's capable hands are all over the drum beats of this track with the quick samples overdubbed with hard and low basses to go alongside the lyrics. Croft and Sim take Florence's lyrics and craft them around their dueling singing style to make this track even more powerful than the original. When Jamie xx builds the song with some Caribbean style xylophones the track just gets better and better.
Then it becomes great. At just over two minutes, Jamie xx takes the sampling of Florence's voice on the original track and breaks it down and, to be perfectly honest, fucks around with it. The result is purely spectacular. Your mind is still spinning as you faint only to be caught by Croft's supple and beautiful voice. The rest of the song is equally as fulfilling and affecting.
So how is this the future of music? Because it is both original and something we've heard before. The talent of these three musicians is something that could bridge the gap between truly "good" music, and radio music. With Jamie xx supplying the beats and samples with his overwhelming talent, this group is good. Double that with the undeniable chemistry of Croft and Sim and you get something amazing. As long as they maintain those two things, the future is bright for this young trio.

SONG OF THE DAY: New Order - "586"
Your Song of the Day for January 17th is a blast from the past from one of our favorite post-punk bands, New Order. With their recent reunion announcement and a notable scheduled performance at Ultra Music Festival in Miami, it only seemed fitting. The fourth track off their famous album Power, Corruption & Lies slowly leads you in for two minutes before breaking into one of the more danceable section of the album and doesn't let up for the rest of the song. An essential listen for all our readers.

SONG OF THE DAY: Gotye - "Somebody That I Used to Know"
The third track on Gotye's newest album, Making Mirrors, seems to become an instant favorite upon first listen, and rightfully so. "Somebody That I Used To Know" shows true lyrical depth by telling the story of the ending of a meaningful relationship. The track begins with the slow embrace of Wally De Backer's voice over a simple accompaniment of guitar and xylophone. De Backer uses powerful lyrics such as "You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness" to convey his struggle. After two verses, the track continues to build into a much more aggressive chorus where De Backer tells the ex-lover "Now you're just somebody that I used to know". Kimbra is featured in the track as she plays the part of the antagonist in between the two choruses.
It is almost impossible to not be able to relate to "Somebody That I Used To Know", which is partly what makes it so good. The track is about as real as it gets, which is evident in De Backer's emotional voice, which dominates the song.

SONG OF THE DAY: The Shins - "Phantom Limb"
The Shins’ newest track, “Simple Song”, inspired a nostalgic look back at why I love The Shins so much. While traveling down the clichéd memory lane, I thought back to the first time I had heard The Shins. Soon after making the realization that The Shins shared the name of a body part, I fell in love. The first tune I had heard, “Phantom Limb” quickly rose to the tops of my iTunes play count.
“Phantom Limb” provides the feel-good, sing-along mentality that everyone loves while using complex and meaningful lyrics. It makes you want to scream, “I love this song” at first listen. After more careful consideration of the mysterious lyrics and meaning, a sense of insecurity and imbalance is found. The lyrics reflect the feeling of not fitting in, which everyone has experienced at some points in their life.
“Phantom Limb” carries a much different feeling than tracks on previous albums. One would hardly recognize it as the same band that produced old favorites such as, “The Past an Pending” and “New Slang”. The diversity produced in albums by The Shins is as impressive as any I have heard. Oh, Inverted World, Chutes Too Narrow, and Wincing the Night Away each show a different side of the band. Port of Morrow (Due Out March 22nd) is looked forward to with great anticipation of what is to come after such a long hiatus. If “Simple Song” is any kind of indication, it will be another great album.
